Holiday Yummies, Filling Tummies

December 18, 2020

Eggnog, cookies, cinnamon rolls…the traditional holiday go-to’s.

But did you know that countries around the world celebrate the holidays very differently than we do?

Especially when it comes to food!

From the Tamales in Costa Rica,

(these a-maize-ing bundles of meat, cheese, and veggies are corn-sumed all over Latin America)

to the Doro Wat in Ethiopia,

(spice things up with this stewpendous dish. Warning: you might knead some injera bread to help with the spice)

to the Kurisumasu Ni Wa Kentakkii in Japan,

(yep, Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas… which just so happens to fall on a Fry-day this year! So if you ever feel like winging it, this might be something to add to your bucket list)

to the Laufabrauð in Iceland,

(be-leaf it or not, it’s also known as “leafbread” because of how thin it is. Maybe you can make it part of your holiday icetinerary to prepare this dough, decorate it with geometric patterns, and deep-fry it)

to the Bûche de Noël in France,

(Yule love this cake, especially when it’s decorated to appear like it was found in the woods behind your house)

families all over the world come together to enjoy their favorite holiday food traditions.

Here’s to creating your own holiday traditions, especially around food, & to feeling good—because after all, it’s Friday!

P.S. Food is such an important part of life, and everyone deserves to have enough to eat.

That’s why we microloan to farmers and businesses that are focused on feeding their local communities.

This helps empower local farmers to produce more food and helps grocery stores stock the shelves with affordable items, getting much needed food in more people’s hands.

Let’s continue helping the world - one microloan at a time.

"During our trip to Laos, we took a long river trip up the Mekong river. I wanted to visit a remote elephant sanctuary where the elephants are not required to perform heavy labor and their natural habitat is protected. The elephants in this sanctuary are handled by people called Mahouts. When only a small boy, a Mahout is paired with a baby elephant, and they are bonded for life. The Mahout are a people and a way of life that is rapidly disappearing. It was truly special to meet them.”
